Disappointing Saturday

17 July 2021

We are still in the training phase for our September Rail Trail Adventure.  On Saturday, 17 July, we loaded our bikes, safety gear and hydration in the Subaru and headed towards the White Oak Bayou Greenway https://houstonparksboard.org/about/white-oak-bayou.  This is a popular concrete hike/bike path along the mostly concrete-lined White Oak Bayou.  Most of the route is located north of downtown but it connects with other pathways once the downtown area is reached.  We usually do a 35 to 40 mile route.  It’s a little boring for me but I do like the after ride dining and beer opportunities.  So far we have visited Tacos A Go Go on TC Jester https://www.tacosagogo.com/ and the Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company https://www.buffbrew.com/.

We got a bit of a late start but setout nonetheless for a hot ride and cold beers.  On the way north from El Lago we spotted warnings of freeway closure.  We diverted to an alternate route  in hopes to avoid traffic delays but it seems either everyone else had the same idea or maybe just everybody likes to get out and motor around on Saturday mornings.  After about two hours and little progress toward our destination we bailed and headed back to El Lago only to get into even more traffic.  What a mess!  We were so disappointed in the situation that had some pizza and spent the rest of the day in the air conditioning.

The bikes got a ride but we didn’t!
